Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 0.5 cup mashed blueberries fresh or thawed frozen, unsweetened
  • 0.5 cup finely grated carrot lightly packed
  • 0.25 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil melted and cooled
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 0.25 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking powder

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the mashed blueberries, grated carrot, applesauce, egg, and oil, and whisk until smooth and well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and baking powder.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until a thick, scoopable batter forms, similar to muffin batter. Do not overmix.
  5. Use a 1 tablespoon scoop or small spoon to drop 20 mounds of batter onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  6. Gently flatten each mound with the back of the spoon or lightly floured fingers to form small discs about 0.25 inch thick.
  7. Bake for 23 to 25 minutes, until the tops are set and the edges feel just firm to the touch but the centers are still soft.
  8. Remove the pan from the oven and let the chews cool completely on the baking sheet before serving to your dog or storing.

Notes

- Always use plain, unsweetened blueberries and applesauce with no added sugar, spices, or xylitol.
- Let the chews cool fully before offering them to your dog to avoid mouth burns.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
- If your carrots are very moist, lightly squeeze or pat them dry before adding to the batter to avoid excess moisture.
- Adjust portion size based on your dog’s size and daily calorie needs, and introduce any new treat gradually.
