Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 cup finely chopped fresh broccoli florets lightly steamed and patted dry
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup low sodium chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons natural peanut butter unsalted, no sugar, and no xylitol

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly steam the broccoli florets until just tender, then cool and finely chop; pat dry with a paper towel.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, and baking powder.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, chicken broth, and peanut butter until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until mostly combined.
  6. Add the chopped broccoli and mix until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms that holds together when pressed.
  7. Lightly flour a work surface, turn the dough out, and knead 4 to 5 times until smooth.
  8. Roll the dough to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  9. Cut into small shapes or bite sized squares with a knife or cookie cutters.
  10. Arrange the pieces on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each treat.
  11. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden and the centers feel firm.
  12. Let the treats cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog.

Notes

- Never use peanut butter that contains xylitol, added sugar, or artificial sweeteners; these are toxic to dogs.
- Store cooled treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- For crisper treats, let them sit on a wire rack for 2 to 3 hours after baking before storing.
- Freeze cooled treats in a freezer bag for up to 2 months; thaw a few at room temperature before serving.
