Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized apple grated or pureed, seeds and core removed
  • 1 medium-sized carrot grated or pureed
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour or gluten-free alternative
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 egg

Method

  1. 1. Wash the apple and carrot thoroughly and remove the apple’s seeds and core. Grate or puree both ingredients.
  2. 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats. Mix well.
  3. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg and stir in the applesauce, grated apple, and carrot.
  4. 4. Gradually mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a sticky dough forms.
  5. 5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it until smooth. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness.
  6. 6. Using a cookie cutter, cut out the desired shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. 7. Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) and bake the treats for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown and hard.
  8. 8. For extra crunch, leave the treats in the oven for an additional hour after turning it off.
  9. 9. Let the treats cool completely before storing or serving to your dog.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
For grain-free options, use gluten-free flour instead of whole wheat flour.
Make sure the apple is completely seed-free, as seeds can be harmful to dogs.
Cut treats into smaller pieces for puppies or small dogs.
