Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 cup mashed ripe banana about 2 medium bananas
  • 1 cup fresh or thawed blueberries
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp honey optional; omit for diabetic dogs
  • 1 1/2 cups gluten-free oat flour
  • 1/2 cup brown rice flour
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon optional; measure carefully

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, lightly mash the blueberries with a fork until they release some juice but still have small pieces.
  3. Add the mashed banana, egg, olive oil, and honey if using to the blueberries and stir until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oat flour, brown rice flour, and cinnamon if using.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. If the dough is too wet to handle, add 1 tablespoon of oat flour at a time until it holds together.
  6. Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll into bite-size balls, about 1 tablespoon each, or flatten slightly into coins for quicker baking.
  7. Arrange the dough pieces on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each treat.
  8. Bake for 18 to 22 minutes, or until the treats feel firm to the touch and the edges are lightly golden.
  9. Remove from the oven and let the treats cool completely on the baking sheet before serving to your dog.
  10. Store the cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Notes

- Never use xylitol or sweeteners containing xylitol; it is highly toxic to dogs.
- Omit honey for diabetic dogs or those on strict low-sugar diets.
- If you only have frozen blueberries, thaw and drain excess liquid before mashing and add 2 minutes to the bake time if the dough feels very wet.
- Introduce any new treat slowly, especially for dogs with sensitive stomachs or on an elimination diet.
- For longer storage, freeze cooled treats in a zip-top bag for up to 2 months and thaw in the fridge before serving.
