Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 cup oat flour divided
  • 1/2 cup blueberries mashed
  • 1/4 cup natural xylitol-free peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed optional
  • 1 tbsp water plus more as needed
  • 1 tsp oat flour for dusting the work surface

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mash the blueberries in a small bowl with a fork until they form a rough puree.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of the oat flour to the mashed blueberries and stir until a thick, purple dough forms, adding a sprinkle more flour if it is very wet.
  4. In a separate bowl, stir together the peanut butter and applesauce until smooth.
  5. Add the remaining 1/2 cup oat flour and the ground flaxseed to the peanut butter mixture and mix until a soft, non-sticky dough forms, adding up to 1 tbsp water if the dough is too dry.
  6. Lightly dust a clean work surface with the reserved oat flour.
  7. Divide each dough ball into 12 equal pieces.
  8. Roll each piece of blueberry dough into a rope about 5 inches long.
  9. Roll each piece of peanut butter dough into a rope about 5 inches long.
  10. Place one blueberry rope and one peanut butter rope side by side, pinch the ends together, and gently twist them to form a spiral.
  11. Place each twist on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them slightly apart.
  12. Bake for 18–20 minutes, until the twists are set and feel firm to the touch.
  13. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the twists cool completely on a wire rack before serving to your dog.

Notes

- Always use natural peanut butter that is xylitol-free, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Store cooled twists in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3–4 days, or refrigerate for up to 1 week.
- For longer storage, freeze the twists in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
- Serve as an occasional treat and adjust your dog’s regular meals to account for extra calories.
