Ingredients
Method
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, mix the pumpkin puree and peanut butter until smooth and well combined.
- Add the egg and honey, if using, and stir until fully incorporated.
- Gradually add the whole wheat flour and rolled oats, stirring until a soft dough forms that holds together.
- If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add the water and mix until the dough is smooth and slightly tacky.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface and place the dough on it, then dust a rolling pin with flour.
- Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness in an even layer.
- Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide.
- Take each strip by the ends and gently twist in opposite directions to form a spiral shape.
- Place the twisted strips on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
- Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the twists are firm to the touch and lightly golden on the edges.
- Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the chew twists cool completely before serving to your dog.
Notes
- Use only unsweetened peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Start with dry hands when shaping the twists to help keep the dough from sticking to your fingers.
- Store cooled twists in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Offer these treats in moderation as part of your dog’s overall balanced diet.
