Ingredients

Ingredients
  • 1 cup pumpkin puree unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter unsweetened and no xylitol
  • 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp honey optional
  • 1 tbsp water if needed to adjust dough consistency
  • Extra whole wheat flour for dusting the work surface

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the pumpkin puree and peanut butter until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add the egg and honey, if using, and stir until fully incorporated.
  4. Gradually add the whole wheat flour and rolled oats, stirring until a soft dough forms that holds together.
  5. If the dough seems too dry or crumbly, add the water and mix until the dough is smooth and slightly tacky.
  6. Lightly flour a clean work surface and place the dough on it, then dust a rolling pin with flour.
  7. Roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness in an even layer.
  8. Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide.
  9. Take each strip by the ends and gently twist in opposite directions to form a spiral shape.
  10. Place the twisted strips on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
  11. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the twists are firm to the touch and lightly golden on the edges.
  12. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the chew twists cool completely before serving to your dog.

Notes

- Use only unsweetened peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, as xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Start with dry hands when shaping the twists to help keep the dough from sticking to your fingers.
- Store cooled twists in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, in the refrigerator for up to 10 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
- Offer these treats in moderation as part of your dog’s overall balanced diet.
